YouTube Doubled Its Monetization Requirements. Here Is the New Bar to Get Paid.

M3 StudiosSpring, TX5 min readAugust 11, 2026

YouTube is doubling what it takes to get paid, and if you are a Houston creator still climbing toward monetization, the finish line just moved. On Monday, August 10, 2026, YouTube announced the first overhaul of its Partner Program entry bar in roughly eight years. Starting February 1, 2027, a brand-new channel will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days to reach the ad and Premium revenue tier. The old bar was 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. Both numbers doubled.

The roughly three million creators already earning inside the program are grandfathered on the old thresholds, so nobody who is monetized today loses that status because of the new entry math. There is a catch buried in the announcement, though, and it has a date on it: every current partner has to review and accept updated agreement terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, or risk losing access to monetization. A deadline you never opened is still a deadline.

What actually changed

There are three separate moving parts here, and the headlines blur them together. Keep them straight, because they hit different creators differently.

The first is the entry bar for new applicants. From February 1, 2027, getting into the ad and Premium revenue share requires 1,000 subscribers and one of two paths: 8,000 qualified public watch hours over a year, or 20 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. This is the number that doubled. A Houston artist starting a channel this fall is now climbing a wall twice as tall as the one a creator cleared last year.

The second is a new ongoing minimum for Shorts money that applies to everyone in the program, grandfathered or not. Beginning February 2027, a channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views over the trailing 90 days to stay eligible for ad and subscription revenue tied to Shorts. Shorts earnings are no longer something you qualify for once and keep. They are a bar you have to clear again every quarter.

The third is the fine print with the earliest date on it. The updated terms have to be accepted in Studio by January 31, 2027. Miss that and the grandfather clause does not save you, because the issue is not your view count, it is an unsigned agreement.

The number YouTube left alone

Read past the doubled thresholds and there is a quieter fact that matters more to a creator who is not there yet: the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier did not change. Channel memberships, Super Thanks, and YouTube Shopping still open at 500 subscribers, not 1,000, and not behind any watch-hour wall. YouTube also widened the money that lives outside the ad share for channels below the new bar, adding Shopping bonuses, brand-deal incentives, and payouts for starting or feeding platform trends.

That is the tell. YouTube is pushing the hardest, most crowded door, the ad share, further away, while leaving the doors that pay a creator directly wide open. Ad revenue on a small channel was always a slow trickle. The money that arrives faster and more reliably at 500 subscribers is the money that comes from the audience itself.

Ad revenue is the door everyone lines up at. The door YouTube left open pays you directly, and it opens at 500 subscribers.

Why this reads different from Houston

A working Houston creator does not have a distribution problem in 2026. Anyone with a finished record or a real skill can be on every platform in a weekend. What they have is a leverage problem, and the platforms keep quietly rewriting the terms of that leverage while creators are looking at view counts. Today it is YouTube doubling the ad bar. The lesson is not which threshold to chase. It is that a business built entirely on a platform's payout table is a business the platform can re-price without asking you.

The move is to treat YouTube as the top of a funnel you own, not the bank. Use the 500-subscriber tier to turn viewers into members and buyers. Point the audience at something that is yours, an email list, a release, a booking page, a store, so a rule change in a press release on a Monday morning does not decide your income. The creators who will shrug at February 2027 are the ones who were never depending on the ad share to begin with.

What to do before the deadlines

If you already monetize, open YouTube Studio and accept the updated terms well before January 31, 2027. Put it on a calendar today. It is the single action that protects income you already earn, and it is the one most likely to get lost in a notification tray.

If you are climbing toward the bar, pick your lane honestly. Long-form watch time and Shorts views are two different games with two different 2027 numbers, and chasing both at once is how small channels burn out. And whatever you do on YouTube, build the part of the audience that does not live on YouTube in parallel. The platform mechanics, the fan-funding sequence, and the honest math of what a channel actually pays are the kind of thing worth learning in full; our creator education library goes deeper than a news post can, and when the work is ready to be recorded or the brand needs a real front end, book a session or build the visual side at M3 Studios in Spring, TX.

Frequently asked questions

What are the new YouTube Partner Program requirements for 2027?

Starting February 1, 2027, new applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours over the past 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over the past 90 days to reach the ad and Premium revenue tier. That doubles the previous 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.

Do current YouTube creators lose their monetization?

No. Roughly three million creators already in the Partner Program are grandfathered on the old entry thresholds. However, every current partner must review and accept updated agreement terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, or risk losing access to monetization.

What is the new rule for Shorts revenue?

Beginning February 2027, every channel in the Partner Program needs 10 million qualified Shorts views over the previous 90 days to remain eligible for ad and subscription revenue tied to Shorts. It is an ongoing requirement, not a one-time qualification.

Can you still make money on YouTube with under 1,000 subscribers?

The fan-funding tier did not change. Channel memberships, Super Thanks, and YouTube Shopping still open at 500 subscribers, and YouTube added Shopping bonuses, brand-deal incentives, and trend payouts for channels below the full ad-share bar.

When do the YouTube monetization changes take effect?

The doubled entry requirements and the ongoing Shorts rule take effect February 1, 2027. The deadline for existing partners to accept updated terms in YouTube Studio is January 31, 2027.
